The Tree Of Knowledge of Good and Evil
In the bible account of Adam and Eve one must think about this to understand what really happened there. Lets examine it for a minute.
Adam and Eve were placed in a garden like setting which has trees of all kinds including fruits and so on. There also was a special tree known as the tree of "knowledge of good and evil". The warning was that if he ate of the tree he should surely die. So first off this tells you that he was to live forever because the only way he would die is eating of the tree. Secondly and most importantly, there is no way Adam and Eve would know it was a bad thing to do if they did not have the knowledge of good and evil. God did not want them knowing what good and evil was. So put yourself in their shoes for a moment. If you did not have any knowledge of what was good and evil, how could you make a judgment on whether it would be good or evil to eat from the tree. They had no knowledge of good and bad. How do you know you are doing bad when you don't even have the capability or knowledge to judge what is bad.
So, in the biblical account, God had set them up to fail. No matter what tempted them. I am sure they would have thought that when they were tempted by the serpent that God was loving enough to not allow them to be harmed in any way. God had the power to stop this, but he chose to make a deal with the devil.
God is so loving that he allows man to be tempted and fail. Failed because of the lack of knowledge. A knowledge that should have been provided to him to make a proper judgment call. Adam and Eve needed the knowledge to be able to make the choice of doing good or evil. You are only being evil when you have the knowledge of what evil is.
Here is an example. In some very remote places there are males who sleep with very young girls. This obviously in our culture is illegal, immoral and so on. But do they know they are doing wrong? Not at all because they don't have the knowledge of that act being evil.
Just like Adam and Eve, they did not have the knowledge that such an act would be wrong, they were only told that they would die. And further there was no death in the garden of eden so they would not even know what death is. Death came about after Adam and Eve had ate from the tree and God tossed them out of the garden. Thus they were given as well as the rest of man kind, a death sentence.
That seems very unfair and despicable. Why would anyone want to set someone up for failure. Adam and Eve should have been given the knowledge of good and evil first and then given the choice. Thus their call would have been justified.
Further why am I and the rest of the world paying for their mistakes. According to the bible, all mankind was handed a death sentence as a result of their mistake. That's like my neighbor robbing a bank and I go to jail for it. How stupid. I was never given the option to chose so therefore I should not be held accountable.
That's of course if one were to believe what was written in the bible.
